Smokey's Update(10/21)

Tina gave me an update on the progress of Fall color in the Smokey's. It is progressing more slowly than usual which means it should be peaking at the highest elvations next Wednesday. There will be color further down the mountain at Husky Gap, but it will be before its prime. Assuming the forcast of clear weather holds up, she recommended we do the AT hike from Clingman's Dome that we had planned for earlier this month. I agree. If the forcast changes and we think Clingman's will be socked in, we can always revert to Husky Gap. There is a lot more climbing and rough terrain on the Clingman's hike, but hikers can turnaround for the cars whenever they want and not miss much. Also you should plan for much cooler and possibly windier weather on Clingman's than you might expect in Crossville.Bring rain protection no matter what the forcasters say.Remember to email me by Saturday if you plan to attend. I want to be sure we have enough willing drivers. Also let me know if have a preference regarding a 6:15 or 6:45am departure time.
