Wednesday 10-12-2011 Hike -- Smoky Hike Trillium Gap Trail to Brushy Mountain

This hike begins as a gentle climb to Grotto Falls along a wide, well-worn path.  The trail continues behind the 25-foot Grotto Falls.  The hike is rated strenuous due to the elevation gain of 1745 feet which is a gentle push to the Brushy Mountain summit where you will reach a small semi-circular clearing. This spot offers views of the entire eastern flank of the Smokies. You'll be able to see Charlies Bunion, all the way over to Mt. Sequoyah, Mt. Guyot, and beyond. Mt. LeConte will be the dominating feature looking south.  This is the trail the llambas use to take supplies to Mt LeConte Lodge on Monday, Wednesday & Friday, but I doubt we will see them since they leave the trail by 7 am and return late afternoon.  Total lenth is 6.8 miles.  We will promptly depart from Vanity Fair at 7 am.  We will stop at Smoky Mountain Brewey in Maryville on the way home.  Travel is 2 to 2 1/2 hours one-way & carpool cost is $11.  If interested please, let Cheryl Heckler at thehecklers@charter.net or 456-6437 know you are going and if you can drive so she can arrange drivers.
