Wednesday, June 29, 2016, Hike -- Meigs Creek Trail, Great Smoky Mt Nat'l Park

This is a  moderate 7 mile in/out hike with an average elevation gain of 394' per mile and total elevation gain of 1380'. One mile before we reach the trailhead is a pull-off to see Meigs Creek Falls drops 30’. The hike begins at the Sinks where Little River spills over a ledge into a rock bowl and then makes a sharp right to pass easily downstream. From the Sinks, the trail ascends crossing the creek 18-20 times with no footbridges before reaching Buckhorn Gap at 3.5 miles. The crossings are all easy in low water. Some are easy at moderate water levels, and all can be tricky if it has rained all week. The 1st crossing is the deepest. Wearing or bringing water shoes and walking sticks are recommended. Along the way numerous small waterfalls and cascades dot the creek, tucked within banks of rhododendron as it drops down Meigs Mountain. After you’ve made four crossings, a 10’ cascade at 1.5 miles scoots over a smooth rock face. Cautions: 18 creek crossings with no footbridges so wear or bring water shoes. Depart from the Crossville Outlet Mall west parking lot at 7:30am. Carpool cost $8. Photos: Pat
