This 7 mile moderate in and out hike descends through a "stone door" down rock steps that have been built in the crevice. The trail hugs the rock bluff, leading to Indian Rock House, an archaeological site once provided shelter for the Cherokee Indians and a has a two-story rockhouse up high - two openings, one on top of the other. Further along are three interesting stacked rock formations or chimney rocks that are best visible in winter. You’ll have several wet-weather stream crossings as the trail continues in a rollercoaster fashion. The trail affords a nice view of the Tennessee River below as it bears left away from the escarpment. There is smaller second “stone door” before reaching our destination at Lawson Rock Overlook. Optionally, for those wanting a shorter hike, just hike to the chimney rocks and back for about 4.4 miles. Wear boots, bring water, lunch and snacks. Depart at 8:00am CT from Trinity Tabernacle Church on Highway 127 South. Carpool cost $7.
