Due to a high percentage of rain and thunderstorms forecasted for Wednesday, the Stonehenge walk is CANCELLED. The Stonehenge walk is rescheduled for next Wednesday, February 8th.

Wednesday, Feb 8, 2012 Walk -- Stonehenge Golf Course in Fairfield Glade

For a winter change-of-pace, we will do an approximately 8 mile walk around Stonehenge golf course in Fairfield Glade. The walk will start at Bill & Carol Q's house (155 Cromwell Lane). We will start with a 1.5 mile walk through the woods to Stonehenge. Next is a walk on the 2.5 mile path of the back 9 holes (includes nice landscape scenes, and a killer down and up hill). We will then lunch at the Stonehenge Grille ($5.99 for a nice lunch, or spend more if you like). After the lunch break, we will walk the front 9 holes for 2.5 miles. Our adventure will end with a walk back through the woods to the Q's house. Hiking equipment is not necessary, just wear sneakers or walking shoes. For those who do not live in the Glade and want to carpool, meet Bill Harris at the Vanity Fair west parking lot for a 9:00am CT departure. Others arrive at the Q's house around 9:20am. Saturday, February 25, 2012 Hike -- Cloudland Canyon, Rising Fawn, Georgia (Northwest GA)

Located on the western edge of Lookout Mountain, this is one of the most scenic parks in Georgia, offering rugged geology and beautiful vistas. The park straddles a deep gorge cut into the mountain by Sitton Gulch Creek with elevations from 800 to 1,980 feet. The hike is along the West Rim and Waterfalls Trail and includes a 600-step staircase on the way to two waterfalls cascading over layers of sandstone and shale into pools below. The total hiking distance will be about 5 miles and about three to four hours in length. The driving time from Crossville is a little over 2 hours. Bring water, lunch, and snacks. Saturday 1/28/2012 Hike -- Piney Falls and Stinging Fork State Natural Areas, Grandview and Spring City

These two hikes are being combined to give a total hiking distance of about 6 miles. Piney Falls is a 3 mile round trip hike that features the 80 foot tall Upper Piney Falls. Stinging Fork State Natural Area is about 10 miles from Piney Falls and features a 35-foot waterfall and cascade at the end of the 1 ½ mile trail. Due to some elevation gain and possibly slick rocks, the hike is rated moderate. Wear boots, and bring water, lunch and snacks. Depart at 9:00 AM CT at Trinity Tabernacle on Highway 127 South. This is 7 mile hike and is rated moderately difficult due to the steep climb at the end of the hike. The trail follows the banks of Rock Creek, a tributary of the Big South Fork River. The Cove Lake Hiking Club Chapter is leading a hike on the CT beginning at the Northern Terminus of the Trail. The hike begins at the historic Iron Furnace Works in the quaint town of Cumberland Gap. The trail ascends steeply 600 feet to the intersection with the Tri-State Marker Trail (TSM). The TSM pavilion marks the spot where Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia meet. The CT begins at the TSM. From the TSM, the trail passes through a Civil War earthworks site and rises and falls with the curves of the ridgeline for two miles out to the historical boundary of the Cumberland Gap National Park. Scenic views abound, eastward into Tennessee and Virginia, and westward into Tennessee and Kentucky. Total distance: 8 miles round trip. The hike is rated moderately difficult due to the elevation change and the distance. Depart from Vanity Fair parking lot at 6:30 AM CT. Wednesday November 30, 2011 Hike -- HIKE IS ON -- Sewanee Perimeter Trail Hike

** HIKE IS ON ** The weather looks sunny with temperatures ranging from mid-30s to low-40s. We will park at the gates of Sewanee and shuttle to the Cross where we will walk along the bluff for several miles. We will go down to Bridal Veil Falls which should be great with all the rain we have had on the mountain and which is set in a beautiful gorge. We will then hike across to the other side of the bluff, and back around by Green's View to Shakerag. If we still feel we need more, we can hike out to Piney Point and back which is near the gates where we will pick up our cars. It will be about 7 miles with another 2 miles optional to go to Piney Point and back. It is a beautiful hike on which you will see all the highlights of the Perimeter Trail. This is an easy to moderate hike. There is a 12' drop which needs to be negotiated and the length which make it a moderate hike, but the trail itself is relatively easy. Saturday 11-19-2011 Hike -- Cumberland Trail: Signal Point to Hwy 27, Signal Mountain

Join us for one of the most scenic hiking trails overlooking the Tennessee River Gorge. Signal Mountain is the southern terminus of the Cumberland Trail. The trail follows bluff tops and ridges 1,800 and 2,000 ft. above sea level, drops into ravines lush with hemlocks towering over tangled growths of laurel and rhododendron, and crosses Suck Creek over a swinging bridge. The view from Edwards Point covers a long stretch of the "Grand Canyon of the Tennessee," with historic Williams Island below on the left and the city of Chattanooga in the background. Our hike begins at Signal Point after dropping off a vehicle on Hwy 27 (Suck Creek Road). It is an 8 mile hike rated moderate to strenuous and requires good hiking boots and plenty of water. This hike is a loop that descends to the bottom of No Business Gorge, and then follows the creek for a mile or so to the rim of the gorge. The last 100 feet of the climb is through Maude's Crack. There are relics of
an early 20 th century settlement along No Business Creek. There is a side trip to the John Muir Overlook. The hike is approximately 8 miles and rated moderate to strenuous because of the rugged terrain, a stream crossing, and two climbs. Wednesday 10-12-2011 Hike -- Smoky Hike Trillium Gap Trail to Brushy Mountain

This hike begins as a gentle climb to Grotto Falls along a wide, well-worn path. The trail continues behind the 25-foot Grotto Falls. The hike is rated strenuous due to the elevation gain of 1745 feet which is a gentle push to the Brushy Mountain summit where you will reach a small semi-circular clearing. This spot offers views of the entire eastern flank of the Smokies. You'll be able to see Charlies Bunion, all the way over to Mt. Sequoyah, Mt. Guyot, and beyond. Mt. LeConte will be the dominating feature looking south. This is the trail the llambas use to take supplies to Mt LeConte Lodge on Monday, Wednesday & Friday, but I doubt we will see them since they leave the trail by 7 am and return late afternoon. Total lenth is 6.8 miles. We will promptly depart from Vanity Fair at 7 am. We will stop at Smoky Mountain Brewey in Maryville on the way home. Wednesday's hike will be Buzzard Point and Snow Falls (if we think we can cross the creek above the falls). The hike will be 7-8 mi in somewhat more difficult than typical terrain. It features Snow Falls (35 feet), two scenic overlooks, Buzzard Point, Dunn Overlook, scenic creeks, steep gorges, and geologic features. Bring extra old shoes that you don't mind getting wet to cross a creek. This is a moderately difficult 5 mile hike with the last mile being a steep ascent. Majestic stone arches await the hiker: the North Arch has a span of 93 feet and a clearance of 105 feet; the South Arch spans 135 feet with a clearance of 70 feet. We may see the rare Cumberland Sandwort plant along the trail, and we‘ll certainly see some interesting plant communities that have adapted to the dry, shallow-soil conditions. We can stop for lunch at Bacarra's German restaurant after the hike. We'll organize the car pool to enable those who want to skip Bacarra's to go home directly. Lunch may be as late as 2 PM so bring snacks for the hike. Bacarra's doesn't take credit cards, so bring cash. Meet behind the Cracker Barrel for a 7:00am CT departure. Saturday, August 27, 2011 -- Canoe Trip -- Caney Fork River Canoe Trip, Silver Point, TN

The canoe trip is an easy (Class 1) float of 6 miles from the put in at the dam to the take out at the Happy Hollow river access. The Caney Fork features clear, cold water which is good for fishing or swimming on a hot day. To enjoy the scenery and a lazy float down the river, plan to spend approximately 4 hours on the water. Cost is $45 for up to 2 people in a canoe or $45 for one person in a kayak. There is an additional charge of $3 per person for the shuttle service. Reservations are required. Deadline for reservations is August 20 if you are planning to rent a canoe or kayak, and August 24 if you will bring your own. Saturday, August 13, 2011 Excursion -- Fort Loudoun State Historic Area near Vonore, TN

Fort Loudoun State Historic Area provides a glimpse of life during the time of the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Expect a moderate walk of 6 miles as we explore this historic area. The tour/hike will start at 9 am CT at the visitor center with a tour of the museum and a 15 minute interpretive film about Fort Loudon. Then, we will walk to the Tellico Blockhouse/Garrison (TB/G) where the activities of the daily lives of the men, women and children of Fort Loudoun are recreated. As we tour TB/G we see living history re-enactors in costume, an 18th century infirmary, the soldier’s barracks, the commander’s quarters, a blacksmith, a Cherokee encampment, an artillery demonstration and other activities. We will hike the 2.5mile portion of the Obed Segment of Cumber land Trail called Nemo Trail and back out for a total of 5 miles. The hike is rated moderate. From the Nemo Trailhead the hiker is exposed to rising bluffs and glimpses of the Emory and Obed Rivers. At 2.5 miles where the trail continues on across old Alley Ford Road we will turn around and return. We will depart at 6:45 a.m. from Vanity Fair parking lot. Wednesday's hike will be Cummins Falls. The hike is only 3 or 4 miles but it is rated moderate to difficult. There is a very steep, sometimes slippery trail from the top of the gorge to the river that must be descended and climbed when returning. Once down at river level, there is a little under a mile hike back to the falls' splash basin that involves several river crossings which take a lot out of the legs. The river may be over knee deep with a fast current so plan to get wet at least to the knees. The river bottom is rocky and slippery so worn out hiking boots may be a better choice than flimsy river shoes or sandels. Any valuable like a wallet or camera should probably be protected from water damage with a zip lock bag in the event of a fall. Special liability measures are required for minors. Hopefully all these percautions don't obscure the fact that this is a magnificent waterfall with the 8th largest flow rate in the state. The splash basin is one of Travel and Leisure Mag's 10 best swimming holes in the country so you may want to take a dip. We will depart Cracker-barrel at 6:45. Gas will be $6. Located on the western edge of Lookout Mountain, this is one of the most scenic parks in Georgia, offering rugged geology and beautiful vistas. The park straddles a deep gorge cut into the mountain by Sitton Gulch Creek with elevations from 800 to 1,980 feet. The hike is along the West Rim and Waterfalls Trail and includes a 600-step staircase on the way to two waterfalls cascading over layers of sandstone and shale into pools below. The total hiking distance will be about 5 miles and about three to four hours in length. The driving time from Crossville is a little over 2 hours. Bring water, lunch, and snacks. TOMORROW'S PINEY RIVER HIKE WILL BE CANCELED DUE TO PROJECTED RAIN.

This trail winds along streams and the Piney River most of its 8.5 mile length. Designated as a pocket wilderness by the Bowater Paper CO., it is now part of the Cumberland Trail. The trail is not difficult but is long and the hike should be undertaken only by hikers that can complete 8.5 miles. Sites of interest along the trail include a picturesque 100 foot suspension bridge and the remains of an old dinky railroad bed. A visit to the Spider Den will be included, if enough hikers are interested. We will need to arrange a shuttle on this one way trail and will hike at a moderate pace. Wear boots, and bring water, lunch and snacks. We will depart at 8:00am CT at the Cracker Barrel in Crossville. For those living South of town, we will plan to meet at the Trinity Tabernacle shortly around 8:10am. Gas cost is $4.00. Saturday's tour and hike are CANCELLED since Wednesday's tornados hit Vonroe hard. There is no power in the area. Power will not be restored for several days. Also, many trees are down. We will RESCHEDULE for August 13, 2011.

Fort Loudoun State Historic Area provides a glimpse of life during the time of the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Expect a moderate walk as we explore this historic area. The tour/hike will start at 9am CDT at the visitor center with a tour of the museum and a 15 minute interpretive film about Fort Loudon. Then, we will walk to the Tellico Blockhouse/Garrison (TB/G) where the activities of the daily lives of the men, women and children of Fort Loudoun are recreated. As we tour TB/G we see living history re-enactors in costume, an 18th century infirmary, the soldier’s barracks, the commanders quarters, a blacksmith, a Cherokee encampment, an artillery demonstration and other activities. Tennessee's State Naturalist Randy Hedgepath will join us for a 5 mile hike around the lake. Randy has extensive knowledge of nature, especially trees and wildflowers. He will add insight to the hike at Fort Loudoun which is rich in history as well as nature and he can detail the past and identify what we see on our hike. The tour/hike will led by Levonn Hubbard. Carpoolers will meet at Cracker Barrel in Crossville for a prompt 7:00am departure. Gas cost is $10. This is a 13 mile hike that features numerous waterfalls and scenic overlooks above deep gorges. Due to the length and some strenuous climbs, the hike is rated difficult. The hike begins at the Fiery Gizzard parking lot and requires a rugged climb for the first 5 miles as we ascend to Raven Point, one of the most spectacular overlooks in the South Cumberland Recreation Area. The rest of the hike is fairly flat as we walk along the top of the Cumberland Plateau. At about 10 miles, there is a steep descent into the 200 foot deep Laurel Branch Gorge. Within 1/10 mile, we begin a steep ascent out of the gorge. Once out of the gorge, we have another 2.5 miles of fairly easy hiking that gets us to Foster Falls. The hike requires a car shuttle. We will hike 6 miles into the Daddy’s Creek Gorge and arrange for a 1 mile car shuttle so that we do not have to retract our steps. The trail is difficult due to the elevation change and lots of rock steps. From the trailhead, the trail proceeds down "a thousand steps" through Daddy's Creek gorge under sheer bluffs. After a mile, the trail rises out of the canyon and remains on the top of the bluff. There are a couple of overlooks that provide a view of the gorge before the trail goes back down into the gorge on the way to the junction of Daddy’s Creek and the Obed River. Depart from Cracker Barrel on Highway 127 at 8 AM CDT. Those in the Fairfield Glade area may join the caravan at 8:15 at the 4-way stop at the intersection of Peavine Road and Stonehenge Drive. APRENTICE main Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area – We will meet the Soddy Daisy Chapter at the main parking area in Prentice Cooper at 10:00 am ET. We will hike from the parking area to the Indian Rockhouse and Stone Door and continue toward the Popular Springs Campsite. The group will decide on Saturday how far to hike but, expect total distance to be about 8 miles. The estimated total distance to Popular Springs Campsite is about 10 miles. We will stop for a snack break at about the half way point and then reverse directions along the same path to return to the vehicles. Driving Directions: From Crossville, take US-127 south, continue on Signal Mountain Road (US-127) and go about 1.6 miles; take left onto Suck Creek Rd (TN-27) and go about 7.9 miles; look for the Prentice Cooper sign; turn left at Game Reserve Rd and continue to follow signs. Cherohala Scouting Trip last Tuesday

Bills Harris and Eldridge, Ginger and Jim scouted two hikes departing from the Cherohala Skyway last Tuesday. The hikes were 2.5 mi each and we stopped at Bald River Falls on the way back. The Skyway runs east from Tellico Plains, 2.5 hrs of driving to the trailheads, so it's a long way to go for 5 mi of hiking. But, it is probably worth it during the azelia season in June. It's a good opportunity to see lots of mountains and azelia covered balds which we don't see around here. in addition it should be cooler than the plateau since the elevations are over 5k ft. Tony Hook will lead a hike to Brady Mountain overlook and back (6 miles round trip). Meet at Brady Trailhead at 11:00am CT, or to carpool, INSTEAD OF Trinity Tabernacle Church, MEET AT the Recreation Bldg in Cumberland Mountain State Park at 10:30 AM CT. This is the building near the swimming pool where the dinner and awards ceremony will be held. If you are coming into the park from Hwy 127, take the first road on the left and drive on back until you come to the parking lot. If you cross the dam, you passed the road. We can consolidate some cars and carpool from the recreation bldg.

At 5:30 pm attend the CTC Volunteer Appreciation Banquet at the Cumberland Mountain State Park Recreation Lodge. Lefty's BBQ will cater the event.

Piney Falls is a 3 mile round trip hike that features the 80 foot tall Upper Piney Falls.
Stinging Fork State Natural Area is about 10 miles from Piney Falls and features a 35-foot waterfall and cascade at the end of the 1 ½ mile trail. Due to some elevation gain and possibly slick rocks, the hike is rated moderate. Wear boots, and bring water, lunch and snacks. Meet at 9:00 AM CT at Trinity Tabernacle on Highway 127 South. We will be assisting the rangers with GPS work and exploring around their Headquarters. It will be a fun hike that will start at the Head of Sequatchie at 8 AM CST and should return before 12 noon. We will hike to the back field area of the valley site to GIS some of the rock walls and take pictures in that area. The hike will be in fields and in woods with no trail. Time will decide how many of our formations that we will be able to GIS. At least two GPS units and one digital camera will be provided. Ranger Anthony Jones will lead the group. This is the newest trail in the Park. It features a 4.5 mile loop. Leaving from the trailhead at Group Camp #2, the trail leads into an open field, close to the site of the Gilbert Gaul homestead. Gaul was a painter who moved to the area in 1881 when he was in his twenties and completed several paintings while in residence. The return loop goes along the lake. Since this is a fairly short hike, we will plan to add stops at Fall Creek Falls overlook, Buzzard Roost overlook, Piney Falls & Piney Falls overlook after we finish with the hike. The Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation has the one-time option to purchase 186 acres at Cummins Falls, Tennessee's largest privately owned waterfall. At 75 feet in height, it's the eighth largest waterfall in the state in magnitude of water and its "dramatic topography" helps protect flourishing wildlife.

The hike will be about 3 – 4 miles in length depending on the amount of interest in walking above and below the falls. This is a moderately difficult hike both due to the elevation change from the parking lot to the falls and due to the fact that there will be some rock scrambling as we explore the area around the falls. We will park and walk about 1 mile down a gravel road to reach the waterfall. Meet at the trail head at 10:00 AM or at the Cracker Barrel in Crossville at 8:30 AM to car pool. Wear sturdy shoes/boots, bring water and snacks. The trail passes through rock structures on the way down to Windlass Cave and then on to the ending trailhead. This is a 10 mile hike rated difficult due to its length, but the footing is good and the overall grade is downhill. The hike passes several rock houses, a small waterfall and a couple overlooks on the way to Angel Falls Overlook, which is a massive rock outcropping several hundred feet above the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River. Hikers will shuttle cars and depart from the Bandy Creek trailhead finishing at Leatherwood Ford. Wear boots, bring water and lunch. Meet behind Cracker Barrel at 8:00 AM CDT. This hike is a loop that decends to the bottom of No Business Gourge, then follows the creek for a mile or so to the rim of the gourge. The last 100 feet of the climb is through Maude's Crack. There are relics of an early 2oth century settlement along No Business Creek. There is a side trip to the John Muir Overlook. The hike is approximately 8 miles and rated moderate to strenuous because of the rugged terrrain, a stream crossing, and two climbs.
