Saturday/Sunday, June 8 & 9, 2013 Overnight Hikes -- Roan Mountain area hikes/North Carolina Overnight

On Saturday we will 1st do a moderate 5.1 (roundtrip) out and back hike on the AT to Grassy Ridge Bald with elevation gain of 1150 feet.  Grassy Ridge Bald is one of the highest grassy balds in the Appalachian Mts at 6189 feet.  Afterwards we drive to the Cloudland Hotel site (There is a $3 car fee); here there is an option of hiking 1.2 mile and back (2.4 mile roundtrip) from the Cloudland Hotel to Roane High Bluff which is perched on an outcrop 6200 feet up in the Roan Highlands with views as far as you can imagine on a clear day or driving to a parking area and hiking .5 mile to Roane High Bluff and back (1 mile roundtrip).  On our drive back we will stop at the Rhododendron Gardens with a choice of an easy 0.3 mile loop or continue on a longer figure-eight loop.  Bring hiking boots and a jacket even in the hot summer days in the valley.  Bring snacks and a lunch to eat someone on the trail on Saturday and plenty of water.  We will eat dinner on Saturday at a restaurant of our choice and stay overnight in the Red Roof Inn in Johnson City.  Sunday we will enjoy a moderate 5.5 mile round trip hike to the 40’ high and 50’ wide Laurel Falls.  We will stop at a restaurant for Sunday lunch on return home.  Depart at 7 AM CT, with a car pool gas cost of $25.  For information and to register contact Cheryl Heckler at thehecklers@charter.net or 931-456-6437.
